Accomplishments
As one of your state committeemembers, I have accomplished the following since joining the WSDCC in 2013:
- Joined the executive committee as a voting member representing the 1st Congressional District, one of my goals for the 2023-2024 term
- Sponsored a successful amendment to the state party bylaws that requires the executive committee to notify the full Washington State Democratic Central Committee when it is having a meeting so state committeemembers can observe the proceedings, require executive committee meeting minutes to be published in a timely fashion, and establish reporting requirements for congressional district representatives on the executive committee
- Consistently provided detailed written reports on the important work of the WSDCC after its meetings, which PCOs and members have told me is very helpful and informative.
- Sponsored a successful amendment to the state party bylaws (2017) to create a new standing committee, the Advocacy Committee (the only new standing committee to have been created this century!)
- Co-chaired the Advocacy Committee from its inception in 2017 until 2021 at the request of our State Party Chair
- Sponsored a successful amendment to the state party charter (2016) to begin using gender-neutral, inclusive language to refer to state committee representatives (state committeemembers instead of committee men and women)
- Successfully co-led (with Jonathan Brebner, Scott Alpsach, and Robert Cruickshank) the effort to adopt a Delegate Selection and Affirmative Action Plan (DSAAP) for the 2020 presidential cycle that -- for the first time! -- utilized a presidential primary for delegate allocation, rather than an all-caucus system, as overwhelmingly requested by the 2016 45th Legislative District Democratic caucus
- Worked with fellow state committeemembers and state legislators to change party rules and state laws governing the selection of presidential electors to ensure that Washington voters will never be betrayed by renegade faithless electors again
- In addition to forming the Advocacy Committee, I also previously served on the Technology Committee and the Rules Committee. On Rules, I worked on improvements to our standing rules with colleagues from across the state.
Advocacy Committee Leadership
As co-chair of the Advocacy Committee, I oversaw the development of our first four legislative priorities surveys and subsequent agendas (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), which you can check out here.
These carefully thought out, grassroots-driven priorities documents have been widely praised by other activists in our party and have been well received by our Democratic state legislators and local party organizations looking for guidance to fuel their grassroots lobbying.
Under my leadership, we also established a state party lobby day, a tradition that continues. The state party is planning on offering Lobby Day again in 2023; it's scheduled for January 27th.
Electoral Competitiveness
I've also worked with our state party officers and fellow Democratic party leaders to strengthen our party's electoral competitiveness. In my nearly twenty years of involvement in the party, we have:
- Turned the 45th District solidly blue, electing Democrats to every one of our district's state legislative positions for consecutive terms (no Republican has won a legislative election in the 45th since 2014)
- Flipped the 8th Congressional District with Kim Schrier (2018) and the 3rd Congressional District with Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (2022)
- Flipped the 6th County Council District with Claudia Balducci (2015) and the 3rd County Council District with Sarah Perry (2021)
- Elected the first Democratic Secretary of State -- Steve Hobbs -- in decades (2022)
- Reclaimed the State Treasurer's office with Mike Pellicciotti (2020)
- Kept all of the above in Democratic hands in the 2024 presidential election
- Defeated three of four dangerous measures to destroy public services sponsored by Jim Walsh and funded by Brian Heywood
We've also won every U.S. Senate race, every gubernatorial contest, and every presidential election in Washington during that timespan.
